Timex Men's 100-Lap Ironman Triathalon Speed & Distance Watch #T52832

I just received the Timex Speed and distance watch and I have to say I am impressed. The GPS accuracy is stunning. It links up with the satellites quickly after the first time you use it, which is normal for a GPS.

The first time I used it I only ran from my back porch to my garage- a distance of about 30 feet- and it began recording my movements within the first three feet, including average speed and distance traveled.
The GPS constantly corrects the time (like a cell phone) which is a great feature. If you purposely set it 5 minutes ahead it will only correct it to the seconds and will keep it 5 minutes fast(!) ...Pretty cool technology.

One thing you should be aware of is the watch isn't the only piece of equipment necessary to use the GPS functions. There is a GPS unit that you have to either strap to your arm or clip to your pants. The unit is 3" tall x 3 1/4" wide and 1 1/4" deep. It weighs 6oz. with the strap. It's not huge by any means but slightly cumbersome if you like to travel light like I do. I am a triathlete and I would never wear the GPS unit in a race, it's just too big and cumbersome and would never fit under a wet suit. For training it's fine though. I will be curious how well it clips to my running shorts as I don't really want to have the unit strapped to my arm. This could end up becoming an issue but I'll have to wait and see. If you already wear an MP3 player you might look like a running cyborg with all the electronics attached to you. If I saw that I would probably have to laugh, especially if they pulled out a cell phone! It's something to consider.

The only problem I had was the watch had a broken "Split/Reset-Set" button when I received it. After confirming it was broken with Timex I requested a replacement from Amazon via the online form. It was simple, quick and very user friendly. I called customer service and was routed to India, oh-oh. As is typical with Indian call centers I received perfect robotic help from someone who put me on hold for a long time after each question I asked (obviously reading the online database for help which I could have done myself). He lacked critical thinking skills and only repeated the same response to me over and over. This was no help at all. I requested another customer service number and spoke to someone in the Philippines and all was good. I don't understand why companies still farm out their customer service to India. This situation happens all the time and everybody I know can't stand it; it's even worse for women.

Overall I am happy with the watch replacement and very happy with my Amazon shopping experience. If you pass up the deal on this watch you are crazy. By simply adding a heart rate monitor this watch would cost 0. It's a bargain and a half!

Specifications

Get the most out of your workout with the Timex Speed and Distance Ironman Triathlon digital sports watch, which includes a GPS transceiver that calculates speed and distance data. This unique watch and GPS system is designed to measure current, average and maximum speeds and workout distances for a wide range of athletic applications--from running and biking to skiing/snowboarding and rowing. The portable GPS transceiver receives signals from up to 12 satellites, converts the signals to GPS data, and then transmits the data to the watch via proprietary digital FM signals. It also automatically synchronizes time of day with GMT ensuring accuracy. The transceiver can be worn on the upper arm or snapped into a waist holder.

This Speed and Distance system will track your speed (real-time, average, and maximum), pace (real-time, average, and best), and overall distance. This model also offers target alarms that will notify you when you reach preset upper and lower limits for either speed or distance. Sport timing features include a 100-lap memory chronograph, lap and split times, countdown timer, and memory recall. It also offers 12/24-hour displays, separate daily/weekday/weekend alarms, and a 5-minute alarm backup.

This T52832 model features a hardened resin case with dark gray and silver bezel accented by yellow lettering and a dark gray resin strap with silver ring highlights. The Indiglo night-light's Night Mode feature allows you to illuminate the backlight for 3 seconds with any button press, regardless of the mode or function. The watch is water resistant to 50 meters (165 feet) and the GPS sensor is splash resistant.

Customer Review

Bulky and defective - Run and Dance - Middle GA
If it weren't for the brick you have to strap to your arm, this would be an okay watch. The a few of the cells on the LCD display stopped working and it makes it very difficult to read.

Timex Speed & Distance - Barry J. Hyde - Orlando, Fl
This product is a great idea and works very well.
I purchased the watch to assist in training for a marathon. It is ideal for clocking distance and time for all my routes, and takes the guess work out of my long runs through the park.

Things I like about the product:
-The GPS unit is a separate unit; therefor the watch can be used as a fully functional "stand alone" watch.
-The GPS unit has a pretty good strap and clip unit that enables you to secure the unit to your arm or belt or camelback etc.
-So far I have gotten at least 20 hours out of one set of batteries on the GPS unit.

Things I don't like about the unit:
-The GPS can take up to 5 minutes to synchronize with the satellites.
-I lost signal a few times while running. This was temporary but it can through off pace etc.
- The GPS unit is a little bulky: It's about the size of a fat wallet and weighs ~6 oz.
